After Eden Garnished with Cheese and Sugar

I just finished reading one of the nicest graphic novels ever created. It's not something I would have thought of buying, or reading for that matter, but after much pondering I decided to pick it up and go through the motions. And it beat the hell out of me. For one whole day and a half at the office, I finished it.

"After Eden" was worth reading in every sense. The plot, the concept, the way it was drawn, and the way it was written made me really feel like I was watching an anime. I could hear the deep baritone of the main male characters in the story; the chic lit voices of the females; the crash, bamm, pok, and other sound effects of a hard core fiction; and, well, I could actually hear the background music.

The story is about love, finding it and holding on to it, in a vague setting because according to Arnold Arre, the creator, love is universal. I can't say I can relate to it, but it had me eating out of its pages with wide open eyes, dropped down jaws, and cheese and sugar oozing out of my hypothalamus. What can I say! Although I appear hard and indifferent, I'm still a girl.

Robots and the Real World

Yesterday, all I could think of was to catch up on the sleep I sorely missed during the Holy Week. But instead of doing just that I joined Bam, Wappy, and Mike in an annoying ticket mishap, due to the ticket sales ladies at Eastwood acting like robots, which turned out to be a really worth it movie. We watched "Robots".

The concept was fantastic. Whoever thought a robot could grow up by just changing its parts into more "grown-up" parts, or that you can look better yet act like a total jerk if you get a complete upgrade.

That aside, what really stuck to me was the message that was being emphasized over and over again: "You can shine no matter what you're made of." That and "A dream you didn't fight for will keep haunting you for the rest of your life." I think so. How else will we realize a dream come true if we didn't try and make it happen.

A Time of Firsts In Baguio

Of all Baguio trips, methinks this one was best. For one, there were no parent-daughter/son fights. Plus the fact that those present were mostly peace-loving creatures who wish to avoid disputes in a peace-loving land, in a peace-loving season.

I came across this quote, which appropriately was my quote for the week: "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" Perhaps that would be this week.

For the first time I...
1. Had the power (my mom's member card with her name but my signature) to do anything/sign for anything at Baguio Country Club.

2. Played with Macie AND Regina for 5 whole days.

3. Played 2 to 3 games of bowling everyday from Wednesday to Friday.

4. Went to Starbucks John Hay everyday from Thursday to Monday.

5. Had dinner then coffee with Bam, Wappy, Ericka, Mike, and Jem IN BAGUIO.

6. Got allowed to drive whenever and wherever I want without parents and titas.

7. Did not criticize the singing at Pacdal Church.

8. Parked the car on reverse up our steeply inclined driveway.

9. Put in writing that Bam and I promised Regina, Macie and all their future cousins that, as their Titas, will NEVER force them to do anything they don't want to do or don't feel comfortable doing, nor will we give them the guilt trip because we, as nieces, don't like it when that treatment is inflicted on us.

10. ...and Bam caused a commotion all because we couldn't sleep in our own room because of Pop's snore. (Because of that Wappy fell off the bed causing him to stay awake for another hour or so; Kuya Mandy and all the titas woke up because they heard footsteps and a door open and close - us; the drivers in the other house were awakened because they all thought there was a burglar on the loose.)

Addicted to Pets

I think pretty much everyone knows how addicted I am to Neopets. Heck! Bam's (I take care of it for her) and my pet each have their own bank accounts and houses; they go to school, have become strong fighters and geniuses; spend time at the hotel once a week to exercise, use the sauna, play tennis, eat at the buffet, and other what-have-yous.

Since Holy Week is just a week away, and Baguio is awaiting our arrival, I started to miss my sweet kacheek and Bam's meerca (even if he gets mad when I make him eat veggies). So while they spend some time relaxing at the Royal Neopian with all its facilities, I decided to revive my old tamagochi turtle.

Well into my tamagochi's third day, it died. I neglected to remember the fine print that says, "Keep out of children's reach." So, yes, I let Macie play with it, and she banged it on the table and it died. It's a pretty good thing she's my niece and is really cute so I don't mind at all. Here's the adorable face of the naughty girl...

NORAH JONES - Live in Manila!

Jars of Clay put me on a high for days. Norah Jones put me under a relaxed state that makes me want to have coffee.

The concert was great. We had great seats, right smacked in the middle, so the view was perfect. The best part is that they were free!

Norah Jones had a really interesting personality. She told jokes, she dazzled the audience with her beautiful voice that sounds 10 times better live than in a recording, and her music soars with the wind.

After singing "Don't Know Why" she told the audience that she sang it in Sesame Street one time. She was supposed to have a date with the letter Y but Y didn't show up because he went to spend time with his X. So she spent the night talking to Elmo instead. When Elmo asked her why Y didn't show up, she sang, "Don't know why Y didn't come." It's really corny but I just find it so cute.

Sleepy and Frustrated

For the first time since exactly a year ago I dedicated my weekend to the SYA weekend retreat. Well, I got involved because Wappy joined it and I was his sponsor. But it did me some good too. Again, I met new people, established stronger ties with those I already knew, and received general absolution.

It's no joke being in Team B (logistics, food, music ministry, stand by - all in one). It gets boring while the talks for the participants are going on so all I can really do is get hooked on a crossword, eat with the rest of the gang, and sing.

On to another side of the weekend, I find it frustrating how "some" people can be extremely insensitive. Yes, I like Greenhills and I love new shoes, but when it's time for me to give support to my cousin who's at his retreat, I want to be there on time. I love these people I'm talking about but I hate it that they have to turn every "eat out" into a feast when there are thousands of people in this country who are starving. And although they do have extra money to spare, I hate it that they "have to" splurge on material things when all they really will do with these things is stock them up. Plus the fact that they have no imagination and they want the things that you already have.

It also frustrated me that while we were happy and peacefully content from the the wonderful mass that ended the retreat, they had to ruin the moment with their own personal financial quirks and what-have-yous and make us take them home so darned late, so now, while they (who are retired) can sleep til later, I am fighting my tired eyes from giving in to sleep.

Hay! I better stop this ranting. I'm just glad that SYA will always be there when I need to lift up my spirit. And if I weren't dragged into a personal driver on a supposedly, blessed Sunday, I probably wouldn't have minded all that had happened yesterday that much.

Concert for The Saviour

JARS OF CLAY - Show You Love, LIVE in MANILA! Woohoo!

I'm still high from last night. I couldn't sleep and yet couldn't wake up, but who cares! It was totally fun and worth it.

To begin with, JJ had inside connections so the entire Youth of San Antonio paid less 10% of the Upper box B seats, but we were seated at Upper box A. And although we couldn't take pictures nor get autographs, we were able to go backstage and see them up close. Thanks to the manager, I also have a free poster. Yes, I realize I sound so star struck!

More important was the music. There were songs I like and already knew but didn't realize were sung by them. There were songs I didn't know but ended up extremely appreciating. And there were songs I love to the very core of my bone that encouraged me to sing along to my heart's content and scream at the top of my lungs.

One of the night's highlights was when they called this guy named Yet and his girlfriend, Monique, to go up the stage and sing "Unforgetful You" with them. Right after that, Yet explained that the concert tickets were his anniversary gift to Monique on that day, and since it was their 10th year together, he proposed to her, on stage, with all eyes on them. Everyone couldn't help but scream and illicit sighs of content.

And so the night ended on a high note, with coffee at Starbucks.

Bam - Hope you did well on your test. Jars of Clay helped you apply it to real life. Hehe!
Wap - Thanks for reviewing Bam! Remember, consummate love! Haha!
Mike - Thanks so much for driving us!
Mikey - I'm so glad you came. Hope you didn't go deaf beside Bam!

"In open fields and wild flowers she breathes the air and flies away. She thanks Jesus for the daisies and the roses in no simple language." On this lenten season "...she'll pray: "I want to fall in you..."

The Importance of Education

I can't believe it. I just read the most brain cell damaging article ever at the Philippine Daily Inquirer. It speaks of the human body and making babies. So, what about it?

A team from the Inquirer conducted a survey on a number of urban poor communities and it turns out that they have NO IDEA where babies come from. So how does that explain their average of 8 to 10 children?!? It's as simple as a lack of education.

These people don't know that they have a uterus, an ovary, egg cells, sperm cells... The women didn't know that you do, in fact, get pregnant as a result of sex, and neither did the men. They simply thought that all these babies are JUST GIFTS from God, no strings attached. On the other hand, the women thought that their monthly period was just a result of the blood flowing through their veins, and the reason why they bleed is because they have an overflow. Wala na akong masabi.

Here's an excerpt of what I just read:
In many communities, Dayrit said many women didn't even know why they had menstrual periods or what the uterus was for. He said a good number of men were no better, completely ignorant of what happens when the sperm and egg unite.

He cited the example of a woman in Bulacan province who decided not to have any more kids, yet continued to have unprotected sex.

"She doesn't understand completely how she can [get pregnant]," he said. If she knew about the process of ovulation then they could "time" their sexual
activities and could avoid unwanted pregnancy, he added.

Duh! Caren has been dumbfounded!
